The Junior League of Kane & DuPage Counties, Inc. is generously donating a bin of stuffed animals and craft supplies to both of the DuPage and Kane County Courthouse Children’s Waiting Rooms. The Children’s Waiting Room and Safe Harbor facilities provide a safe, secure and supervised place in the Courthouses for children to play while their parent or guardian is involved in court proceedings. Every child receives a book and/or a stuffed animal when they leave.
In late February, members gift wrapped birthday presents for 15 children who will be the fortunate beneficiaries of the Humanitarian Service Projects (HSP) Birthday Program! HSP assists over 900 children per year, ages 3 to 11, who live in poverty in DuPage and Kane Counties. The goal of the birthday program is to help create a lifetime of positive memories by providing the children with wonderful packages on their most special day – their birthdays! The best part of this program for JLKD is that there are books in every package that goes out for this program! Thanks to all who donated their wrapping skills to help make sure that we delivered beautiful packages to the program.
The 2013-2014 JLKD New Member class is happy to announce that we are partnering with SPARK in Aurora for this year’s Kids in the Kitchen event.
Kids in the Kitchen will take place on April 12, 2014 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. during SPARK’s “Week of the Young Child” event at the Prisco Center in Aurora. We will be presenting an interactive booth that will allow children and their parents to learn about making healthy choices. Committee Co-Chair’s are Cori Cozort and Erin Tobias.
JLKD Done In A Day & StoryWizards completed a week long book fair at Loaves & Fishes on Saturday, Feb. 1. Volunteers (including Tisia Joseph and Melissa Kryzanowski, pictured with a Loaves & Fishes volunteer) helped families pick out books (provided by a Loaves & Fishes donor) for all of their children! With the weather the way it has been, our timing could not have been better. As a result of this event, many families were equipped with reading material for the indoor time they have had due to the cold and snow!
AURORA, IL (Jan. 8, 2014) — The Junior League of Kane & DuPage Counties, Inc. (JLKD) is excited to announce Spring Fling: Shopping for a Cause. JLKD’s annual Spring Fling is a fundraising event to benefit at-risk youth and their families throughout DuPage, Kane, Kendall and Will counties.
“Spring Fling is JLKD’s premier fundraising event and we expect to sell out again this year. This is a great opportunity for women to come out and party with a purpose,” says Kristin Celing, JLKD president. “Where else can you shop for unique items, spend time with the girls and support families in need right here in Chicago’s western suburbs.”
The event will be held on Sunday, March 9 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hilton Lisle/Naperville. Spring Fling includes a ladies luncheon, silent auction, wine pull, spring marketplace and raffles. Vendors at the spring marketplace represent a wide array of quality products and services including jewelry, clothing, home décor and more. This year’s vendors include The GoodFrog Candle Company, Bazor Designs, A Girl With a Cape, Desmond Brown Designs, PS Designs, and more!
Event tickets are $50. Ladies interested in attending can learn more and purchase event and raffle tickets at jlkd.org.
Additionally, folks can take part in the Spring Fling Raffle, just $25 each, 3 for $70 or 5 for $100. The grand prize winner will choose one of three vacation options: AMA Awards weekend, Napa Valley weekend or Key West. Second prize is a Tory Burch bag and wallet, valued at $775. Third prize winner will take home a David Yurman bracelet, with a value of $475.
100 percent of the proceeds raised at Spring Fling will go directly to support essential community programs. Now in its 19th year, JLKD provides outreach services to organizations and individuals in Kane, DuPage, Will and Kendall Counties. Our vision is to train volunteers to improve the lives of children at risk in the community by promoting literacy, developing self-esteem and providing positive programming.
Spring Fling is made possible with the support of JLKD’s 2013-14 key sponsors: CTI, Inc.; Strategic Solutions, Inc.; Field Works, Inc.; and Sikich LLP.
Angel Gift Distribution
Thanks to all of the Members who sponsored an Angel for this years Salvation Army Angel Gift event. JLKD Members also participated in the distribution of those gifts to the families on Saturday, Dec. 21. The St. Charles Salvation Army serves around 250 families with this program and it was heartwarming to see and hear the gratitude from those receiving families. A parent shared a story with the Salvation Army that her six year old told her teacher that she knows that there is a Santa Claus because her Mom could never afford the toys and clothes that she receives at Christmas! Thank you for helping make sure there are gifts in these children’s lives!
St Scholastica Distribution
On December 21, Members helped receive and hand out more than 100 food baskets and gifts at St. Scholastica Church.
Thank you to all members who were able to attend the DIAD event at Smart Steps in Aurora. Because of everyone’s help, we were able to assemble bags to supply Thanksgiving dinner to 25 families that participate in the Smart Steps Program. We partnered with Story Wizards to provide books to be included in the bags as well. As part of our facility tour, we learned how Smart Steps provides weekly story time, play groups, homework objectives, and at home visits to foster parent and child education. It was an honor to help out such a deserving organization.
Thank you to all who donated items at the November GMM for the two Thanksgiving baskets that were assembled and donated to St. Scholastica Church in Woodridge this past weekend! Close to 200 families received baskets and will be able to have a Thanksgiving celebration that they otherwise would not be able to do on their own! JLKD Members also donated their time and muscles to help receive and organize the donations, as well as assist in loading the donations into the receiving families vehicles.
On October 23, 2013, JLKD members came together to support the Saint Charles Salvation Army. As part of a Done in a Day event, members assembled 72 Halloween-themed party bags to be given to children in the after-school program. In addition, JLKD donated books for every child through the Story Wizards program.
JLKD members donated travel-size shampoo, conditioner, soap, lotion and other “hygiene” supplies at the September general membership meeting. Through Done in a Day, those items were used to create 50 kits for the women and families who come to Mutual Ground. In an effort to fill an emergent need of one of our Community Partners, new members assembled the kits and had the opportunity to hear from Michelle Meyers, Mutual Grounds’ Executive Director, about the organization and how JLKD’s support is making a difference.
It may not look like much, but pictured here is new member Hannah Milliken assisting an applicant, in Spanish, with the paperwork required for families to qualify for the Salvation Army Thanksgiving and Christmas programs.
On Saturday, Oct. 5, the Done in a Day Committee coordinated volunteers from the League to assist residents of St. Charles, Batavia and Geneva with completing their applications (taken in English only) for these programs. Families must provide proof of residency, income and other personal information in order to qualify.
One component of the data gathered is the information that creates the Christmas Angel Tree children’s gift requests – which will be available for League Members the end of October.
