2021 Grant for Impactful Teaching Recipient
In 2021, the Junior League of Kane & DuPage Counties, Inc. (JLKD) proudly awarded a Grant for Impactful Teaching to fund a Bubble and Texture Wall at the Early Learning Center in West Chicago, IL.
The Early Learning Center houses three self-contained classrooms for students with autism or autism like behaviors. The students in these classes require specialized services, interventions, and equipment. Funds awarded will be used to fund the development of a room that will serve as a calm and safe space for students with sensory needs through the purchase of multi-sensory equipment. The purpose of a sensory room is to provide a calm, safe, and therapeutic environment for students that need additional support to meet his/her sensory needs. The use of sensory equipment will help students develop and practice an array of skills such as hand-eye coordination, fine and gross motor skills, and communication. By providing a sense of calm and comfort, sensory rooms help children learn to self-regulate their behaviors, which ultimately improves focus.
