JLKD awards Grant for Impactful Teaching

April 11, 2018

On Tuesday, April 10, 2018 the Junior League of Kane & DuPage Counties, Inc. (JLKD) proudly awarded a Grant for Impactful Teaching to Matthew Radowski of Reed-Custer Elementary School of Braidwood, IL for its Computer Science Education Initiative program. JLKD is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. One of JLKD’s main focus areas is on education and readying children for being more successful in school and increasing the level of college attendance. JLKD selected this program to receive the grant because it identifies and attempts to resolve the need to become more familiar with computer science and readies children to be successful in the later grades and college.

Computer Science Education Initiative will likely impact approximately 600 students, all of elementary school age. As part of the Computer Science Education Initiative, Bitsbox classroom boxes, which provide computer programming projects aimed at young children, will be used to teach kids to code their own computer apps. But the children will not be alone working with these materials, rather, teachers and students will work together to create apps for use on iPads. Those student-designed apps, will then be used on the grade level as well as part of the iPads students will consistently be using.

The need to learn how to work with computers has become more apparent over the years. Matthew Radowski teaches K-5 Computers and Technology and explains, “this will provide excellent synergy as our district is steadily moving toward a district wide advance in devices for students. Students need to know how computers work, and how logic works, and will be able to apply this aspect of problem solving to every academic arena… from language arts to mathematics.” Mr. Radowski excitedly explains the additional positive impact this program will have throughout the school: “Student progress will be celebrated, as the apps and games they build will be showcased on grade level iPads that students will be consistently using. This will allow students to take an inherent pride in their work, and even a desire to perfect their games and apps as other students marvel and inquire.”

JLKD is honored and excited to be able to assist Reed-Custer Elementary School in increasing use of technology in the classroom while developing children’s potential to further careers in technology. JLKD is certain that the Computer Science Education Initiative program will continue to improve the community through the effective action and engagement between teachers, staff, and students.
