JLKD awards volunteer focused scholarship

April 11, 2018

On Tuesday, April 10, 2018 the Junior League of Kane & DuPage Counties, Inc. (JLKD) proudly awarded its volunteer-focused scholarship to Whitney Ford. Ms. Ford was selected for the scholarship because of her many hours of volunteer service focusing on JLKD’s mission. JLKD is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

Whitney Ford is a senior at Plainfield East High School in Plainfield, IL and will attend North Carolina A&T University in the fall where she plans to major in biology and minor in criminal justice. Whitney volunteers with SIDS of Illinois as their social media chair, where she helps raise awareness about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and share lifesaving information regarding safe sleeping habits for newborns and toddlers to prevent future deaths. Through her work with the DuPage County Youth Council and Its Just Us Girls, Inc., Whitney also educates and empowers hundreds of youth in the area by organizing forums on topics such as: voting rights, interfacing with the police, college preparation, human trafficking, safety and physical/emotional health. Whitney shares her love of poetry and creative writing with other students through her work with The Plainfield East High School Poetry Club. As Whitney says of her volunteer experience, “Volunteering with SIDS may not seem like a cause that would be a natural fit for a teenager, but I have learned that sometimes those opportunities are the ones that you learn from the most.” Indeed, Whitney continues, “the leadership skills and compassion that I have developed through my involvement with these organizations, coupled with my love of science, has crystallized my decision to pursue a career in forensic anthropology with the FBI.”

JLKD has no doubt Whitney Ford has positively influenced our local communities and empowered women through her volunteer service. JLKD wishes Whitney all the best as she continues to develop her potential and is honored to be able to assist her in her educational journey.
