Each spring, JLKD holds its annual Earth Day event at Mooseheart, a residential childcare facility, located on a 1,000-acre campus 38 miles west of Chicago. At Mooseheart, children up to the age of 18 live onsite in residences where they are provided with a consistent, systematic method of care, emphasizing development of social skills and education for success later in life.

JLKD and its members engage in various hands-on activities and games with the younger children to educate them on conservation efforts, science, math, and reading. For example, one of the more popular, and messier, activities show children what happens when an oil spill enters the ocean by combining vegetable oil with colored water. Other activities include growing grass and herbs in egg containers, repurposing of cork and other supplies, a dress-up station, and a reading nook. JLKD’s Earth Day event is not only a learning experience; it is also a fun opportunity for the children to develop their social and conversational skills with adults. This is also a perennial favorite activity for JLKD members who look forward to attending each year!

JLKD has a long history of holding annual events with Mooseheart, including activities focused on developing a love of reading, cooking/nutrition and making healthy choices, a 5k run and now sustainability focused fun!
